Review 2009: With 200 exhibitors from 12 countries discussing business with 42,000 visitors, iran telecom 2009 had closed its doors on a very positive note. MTN Irancell had been the official sponsor of the event. To get the full information about iran telecom 2009, please see the Post Show Report.
For operators and vendors alike, the Iranian telecom market offers huge potential. To understand the tremendous growth within the past few years, please see the Iran Telecommunication Statistical Indexes of September 2009, compiled by TCI.
Further information are included as well in Totel’s Iran Telecom Industry Overview of 27 April 2010: “The telecoms market in Iran is, as one might expect, one of the least liberalised in the region. Serious competition exists only in the mobile market where second national mobile operator MTN Irancell now has well over one third of the market. Further liberalisation, in the form of a third national mobile licence and the privatisation of incumbent TCI, took place in 2009 but after a long gestation period and stop-start proceedings. Following its privatisation, a local consortium owns a 50% plus one share stake of TCI. Infrastructure remains under state ownership, managed by Telecommunications Infrastructure Company (TIC). …
Developments continued in October 2009 with the news that Tamin Telecom had won back the licence and was looking for an experienced international telecommunications consultancy partner. Tamin was planning to launch the third mobile operator by end-2010. The licence award to Tamin was confirmed in April 2010. … The third licence includes a 3G licence with an exclusivity period. Fixed-line penetration in Iran is higher than in most Middle East countries. … Tamin Telecom has said that intends to launch mobile broadband services. … Market highlights: Iran is the largest potential market in the Middle East but one of the least developed. A third mobile licence has recently been granted, including exclusive 3G rights. Broadband penetration is very low but the recent launch of WiMAX and the intended launch of mobile broadband by the new mobile licence holder may change this. Internet and satellite TV are highly censored and controlled.“
And CommsMEA has the following as of 12 April 2009:
“Since launching operations in Iran in 2006, MTN Irancell has performed strongly, gaining more than 16 million subscribers and a market share of 37% by the end of 2008, up from 23% at the end of 2007, … In comparison, MCI, the mobile arm of the state run operator TCI, has about 30 million subscribers, … MTN Irancell intends to gain an additional 6 million subscribers by December 2009, … Iran overtook Saudi Arabia in 2007 to become the Gulf region's biggest telecom market by subscriber numbers. The country gained 21 million mobile subscribers in 2008, and now has an estimated total of some 47 million subscribers, and a penetration rate in the "high 60 range" … “.
